-- FRONTIER ROUND-UP --
THE UNKNOWNS

Here are a number of pieces for which we have yet to discover their artists' identities.

[artist unknown], BOLD RIDER - The Dell paperback release of this western by 'Luke Short' (Frederick Dilley Glidden).  The artwork was subsequently utilized on the Dell comic book IDAHO #5 ("Stampede !!").

[artist unknown], RED RIVER DESPERADOS, (POWELL'S ARMY # 6) - Another Zebra paperback release in this western series by 'Terence Duncan' (James Reasoner).  I'd say this is probably painted by George Wilson, as he did a number of other covers in this series and it certainly 'looks like' a lot of his more traditional work.

[artist unknown], MONTANA! - "An epic novel of a rugged, lawless land--and the men who tamed it" - The Dell paperback release of this story by C. Hall Thompson.  The publisher used the art again a number of years later on the first issue of their IDAHO comic series ("A hard riding cowboy hero--Idaho !").  One foreign use of the art was the Swedish paperback BANKRÅNET [The Bank Robbery], a translation of some book (probably ROB A BANK IN KANSAS) by 'Marshall Grover' (Leonard Frank Meares).  Also, a Finnish translation, KOSTON KANNUSTIMET [Range Vengeance], ([He had vowed to come back for revenge...]"Hän oli vannonut tulevansa takaisin kostaakseen...") by 'William K. Reilly' (John Creasey).

[artist unknown], THE SHADOW RIDER - "He was a hunted man on the run, dodging a posse, tracking a killer" - The Signet paperback release of this story by William Colt MacDonald.  A short time later, the art re-appeared this time on the French edition of Gordon D. Sherriffs' Ambush On The Mesa, entitled Une Fille De L'Ouest [A Girl Of The West].  Signet would eventually re-use the art themselves on their release of Ray Hogan's Trail To Tucson ("He gave his word to a dying man--but to keep it he had to shoot his way through Hell...").

[artist unknown], NEMESIS OF CIRCLE A - "He put his terror brand on a killer's range" - The Ace paperback release of the western by 'Reese Sullivan' (Giles A. Lutz).  This was published back-to-back, as an Ace 'Double' with Brian Garfield's western, The Night It Rained Bullets.

[artist unknown], JOHN WESLEY HARDIN,TEXAS GUNFIGHTER - "The true history of the boy killer, John Wesley Hardin, Ace of the Fast Gun crowd...Murderer fo forty men" - The Macfadden Books paperback release of Lee Floren's non-ficton exploration of this 'legend'.

[artist unknown], STAGECOACH - "The great story of the West that became the famed film classic !" - This is Signet's release of Ernest Haycox's western that had been originally titled BY ROPE AND LEAD.  I had thought that I could make out Vic Prezio's signature at the bottom, and even though he did so many of the Signet westerns, in looking closer, I no longer have any confidence in that identification.

[artist unknown], TOWN TAMER - "Ten men wanted Marshal Tom Rosser out of town - or dead, So they put up $2000 to hire the fastest killer in the West." - Belmont's paperback release of Frank Gruber's western.  There is the faintest suggestion of a signature on the cover image that might read "O'Brien", but even then, I'm not sure what 1960s illustrator that would be.

[artist unknown], TRAIL OF THE FRESNO KID - "He hunted his brother among the outlaws" - A paperback release of Ray Hogan's western paired as an Ace 'Double', back-to-back with Tom West's Lobo Lawman.  I saw one trusted source state that Vic Prezio 'probably' painted it, but that likely was a confusion brought on by that artist executing Ace's *next* release of the same Hogan novel.  Gerald McConnell is credited with the cover art of the flip side.

[artist unknown], UNCHAINED LIGHTING, (POWELL'S ARMY # 1) - "Three fearless firebrands exploding across the wild west !" - Another Zebra paperback release in this western series by 'Terence Duncan' (Barbara Puechner).  I'd say this is probably painted by George Wilson, as he did a number of other covers in this series.

[artist unknown], THE COMSTOCK LODE - The Curtis paperback release of this installment of the Rio Kid series, this one by Tom Curry.  Vic Prezio did many of the Rio Kid covers, but in this one, his signature isn't evident (unless that's it among the dark water ripples . . .), so not being confident of that identifcation, it get's placed here.

[artist unknown], THE FORTUNE HUNTERS - This art was first used for Corgi's release of J.T. Edson's western THE FORTUNE HUNTERS.  Then a year later, it was repurposed and used as the cover for Curtis's release of Tom Curry's Masked Rider western, CHAPARRAL MARAUDERS (for which I haven't seen a good enough image of the cover to report on its blurb)-so many Curtis westerns of this time sported Vic Prezio paintings, I at first thought he had created this one, until I sussed out its British origins.  Much later it was repurposed once more to be the cover of Murray Comics's single issue of MATT SAVAGE-TRAIL BOSS ("The Gun Trap On Signal Hill // Raiders Of The Dogiron Herd // Showdown At Rawhide Gulch")

[artist unknown], THE RENEGADE - "Mike McVey, friend of the indians' cause, finds himself trapped in a bloody uprising of vengeful Cheyenne and Sioux. . . . " - Signet's paperback release of Cliff Farrell's western.

[artist uknown], BODIE BEAUTIES, (SPUR # 26) - "Guns, gold and girls - if he lived, he'd get a gut full." - Another release in this adult-western series from Leisure Books by 'Dirk Fletcher' (Chet Cunningham).

[artist unknown], DOUBLE ALIBI, (RED RYDER RANCH COMICS # 151) - "The gunflash in the night spelled a 'Double Alibi'"

[artist unknown], CALL OF THE WAR DRUMS, (MARCH OF COMICS # 140) - An adventure featuring Indian Chief.

[artist unknown], THE FALSE FACE, (INDIAN CHIEF # 5)

[artist unknown], TRAIL OF THE COUGAR, (KING OF THE ROYAL MOUNTED # 28) - "A deadly secret hid the 'Trail Of The Cougar!'"

[artist unknown], [unknown title], (THE CISCO KID # 2)

[artist unknown], RENEGADE BAND, (THE LONE RANGER'S COMPANION TONTO # 32) - "Was his courage enough against the 'Rendegade Band' ?" - I've seen it suggested that the artist is Don Spaulding or (to me, less likely) Morris (Mo) Gollub.

[artist unknown], TERROR IN THE WILDERNESS, (KING OF THE ROYAL MOUNTED # 10)

[artist unknown], WHITE EAGLE AND THE HOSTAGE, (INDIAN CHIEF # 13)

  [artist unknown], A WARRIOR'S CHOICE, (INDIAN CHIEF # 11)

[artist unknown], [unknown title], (RED RYDER COMICS # 128)

[artist unknown], [unknown title], (RED RYDER RANCH COMICS # 149) - With this issue the title slightly changed once again, but series was only three issues from being done.

[artist unknown], [title unknown], (FOUR COLOR # 312) - a Tonto adventure

[artist unknown], [unknown title], (SERGEANT PRESTON OF THE YUKON # 12)/p>

[artist unknown], WILDERNESS TREK, (FOUR COLOR # 333) - presenting an adaptation of Zane Grey's novel of that title.

[artist unknown], [unknown title], (KING OF THE ROYAL MOUNTED # 25)

[artist unknown], THE RED LION, (KING OF THE ROYAL MOUNTED # 11)

[artist unknown], [unknown title], (MARCH OF COMICS # 127) - An adventure featuring Indian Chief.

[artist unknown], [unknown title], (THE LONE RANGER'S COMPANION TONTO # 3) - With this issue Tonto got a much longer title.

[artist unknown], [unknown title], (RED RYDER RANCH MAGAZINE # 146)

[artist unknown], [unknown title], (SERGEANT PRESTON OF THE YUKON # 13)

[artist unknown], CISCO KID 36, (THE CISCO KID # 36)

[artist unknown], [unknown title], (LITTLE BEAVER # 8)

[artist unknown], [unknown title], (FOUR COLOR # 483) - This was a Little Beaver (Red Ryder's sidekick) adventure.

[artist unknown], [unknown title], (RED RYDER RANCH MAGAZINE # 147)

[artist unknown], [unknown title], (SERGEANT PRESTON OF THE YUKON # 10)

[artist unknown], [unknown title], (FOUR COLOR # 660) - This was an adventure of Little Beaver (Red Ryder's sidekick).

[artist unknown], [unknown title], (LITTLE BEAVER # 7)

[artist unknown], DRIFT FENCE, (FOUR COLOR # 270) - "A gripping story of the hard fighting west, packed with blazing action and romance." (presenting an adaptation of Zane Grey's novel, DRIFT FENCE).   Morris (Mo) Gollub is one artist suggested to have painted this.

[artist unknown], [unknown title], (THE LONE RANGER # 46)

[artist unknown], THE RETURN OF ZORRO, (FOUR COLOR # 425)

[artist unknown], HIDE-OUT, (FOUR COLOR # 346) - "picturized edition of Wanderer Of The Wasteland" (an adaptation of the Zane Grey novel)

[artist unknown], THE HAND OF ZORRO, (FOUR COLOR # 574)

[artist unknown], THE RETURN OF NEVADA, (ZANE GREY'S STORIES OF THE WEST # 39) - I'm not yet confident of any artist identification for this piece.  When this painting has come to auction, it has been associated with two artists, Guglielmo de Giorgio and Giorgio De Gaspari.  I think that must be some confusion with some later foreign publications whose cover image is very similar, most likely a 'lift', (not an overpaint).

[artist unknown], [unknown title], (Dell's THE LONE RANGER # 26) - I've seen Morris (Mo) Gollub named as the possible painter of this.

[artist unknown], [unknown title], (Dell's THE LONE RANGER # 27) - I've seen Morris (Mo) Gollub named as the possible painter of this.

[artist unknown], BULLETS AT BAD RIVER, (KING OF THE ROYAL MOUNTED # 23) - "A peaceful pow-wow explodes with 'Bullets At Bad River'"

[artist unknown], [unknown title], (THE LONE RANGER # 61) - Ernest Nordli is the name I've seen thought to have perhaps painted this.

[artist unknown], OLD CREGO, (FOUR COLOR # 314 (back cover)) - "We left old Crego's bones to bleach on the range of the buffalo" - an illustration from the folk-song 'The Buffalo Skinners'.

[artist unknown], [unknown title], (RED RYDER RANCH MAGAZINE # 148)

[artist unknown], [unknown title], (RED RYDER COMICS # 135)

[artist unknown], [unknown title], (RED RYDER RANCH MAGAZINE # 145) - With this issue the comic series was re-titled to this (but for only a short time).  Touted itself as "Adventures on Red Ryder's own ranch."

[artist unknown], [unknown title], (FOUR COLOR # 513) - Adventures of Ben Bowie and his Mountain Men.

[artist unknown], [unknown title], (BEN BOWIE AND HIS MOUNTAIN MEN # 10)

[artist unknown], [unknown title], (FOUR COLOR # 529) - This was an adventure of Little Beaver (Red Ryder's sidekick).

[artist unknown], THE VALLEY OF THE VANISHING MEN, (FOUR COLOR # 608) - An adaptation of Max Brand's Silvertip story of the same name.

[artist unknown], [unknown title], (RED RYDER RANCH COMICS # 150)

[artist unknown], TWIN SOMBREROS, (ZANE GREY'S STORIES OF THE WEST # 35)

[artist unknown], [unknown title], (THE LONE RANGER'S WESTERN TREASURY # 1)

[artist unknown], THE QUEST OF ZORRO, (FOUR COLOR # 617) - "His sword had to be faster than a traitor's tongue" - This art was used as the cover of the published compilation of this sequence of Dell comic adaptations.

[artist unknown], THE CATTLE RAIDERS, (MARCH OF COMICS # 174) - An adventure featuring The Lone Ranger.

[artist unknown], [unknown title], (THE CISCO KID # 35) - The comic cover was featured in STEVE HOLLAND-COWBOY.

[artist unknown], THE THUNDER GUNS, (BEN BOWIE AND HIS MOUNTAIN MEN # 17) - The comic cover was featured in STEVE HOLLAND-COWBOY.

     COVERS -- CLEANED-UP SOME

[artist unknown], RECOIL (BUCKSKIN # 12) - "Morgan battles bloodthristy indians to save the Iron Hoof Ranch." - A Leisure Book's release in the Buckskin paperback adult-western series by Roy LeBeau.  George Wilson seems to have earlier developed this whip-snapper sigil for this series, but appeared not to have done all of the similar ones that followed and this one feels softer, like less than his realistic norm.

[artist unknown], NEBRASKA NYMPH, (SPUR # 11) - "Barbed wire, bullets and beauties greeted Spur when he tried to cool down a red-hot range war." - A release in this paperback adult-western series from Leisure Books by 'Dirk Fletcher' (Chet Cunningham).

[artist unknown], SALOON GIRL, (SPUR # 17) - "Looking for the killer who set the town ablaze, Spur warmed up to a sizzling singer." - A release in this paperback adult-western series from Leisure Books by 'Dirk Fletcher' (Chet Cunningham).  The art from this book was re-used for a double-book release of this story combined with RAWHIDERS WOMAN - it looks to have been modified a bit and color-filtered differently, but that's the cover we are choosing to 'clean-up' somewhat and put on display here.

[artist unknown], RED ROCK REDHEAD, (SPUR # 13) - "The men of Hanging Rocks were after Navajo blood, but the women were after Spur !" - Another release in this Leisure Books adult-western series by 'Dirk Fletcher' (Chet Cunningham).

[artist unknown], MONTANA MINX, (SPUR # 7) - "A range war was brewing, and Spur was right in the middle, along with a lovely, lusty lady !" - Another release in this adult-western series from Leisure Books by 'Dirk Fletcher' (Chet Cunningham).  Note that this art was re-purposed for a later Spur story, released as a 1993 Giant edition, entitled KLONDIKE CUTIE, with its own blurb of "In the frozen north, Spur found twin peaks of danger and delight !".  In all likelyhood, this is a B. Eastman piece, as were the previous six covers, and the next one, but for now, we'll wait for some other knowledgeable attribution to support that.

[artist unknown], SAVAGE SISTERS, (SPUR # 14) - "A former nun and a fiery halfbreed both had lassos on Spur McCoy." - Another release in this Leisure Books adult-western series by 'Dirk Fletcher' (Chet Cunningham).

[artist unknown], MINT-PERFECT MADAM, (SPUR GIANT 1990) - Another Leisure Books release in this adult-western paperback series by 'Dirk Fletcher' (Chet Cunningham).

[artist unknown], NEVADA HUSSY, (SPUR # 10) - "The robbers had a lust for gold, but the lady lusted for Spur McCoy" - A release in this paperback adult-western series from Leisure Books by 'Dirk Fletcher' (Chet Cunningham).

[artist unknown], SUNSET PASS, (FOUR COLOR # 230) - presenting an adaptation of Zane Grey's novel of that title.   I've seen this tentatively attributed to artist Morris (Mo) Gollub.

[artist unknown], [unknown title], (RED RYDER COMICS # 124)

[artist unknown], LONE RANGER 21, (LONE RANGER # 21)

[artist unknown], TROUBLE AT AVALANCHE PASS, (FOUR COLOR # 935) - An adventure of King of The Royal Mounted (a Zane Grey hero)." - The cover was featured in STEVE HOLLAND-COWBOY.

[artist unknown], GOLDEN EMPIRE - The Thorndyke Press paperback release of the western by Dean Owen in the Rio Kid series.  There is a signature, but I haven't come across a good enough image yet to make it out.

[artist unknown], HANG SPUR McCOY!, (SPUR # 15) - "In Twin Falls, Idaho, Spur rode into the midst of a kill-crazy lynch mob." - A paperback release in this Leisure Books adult-western series by 'Dirk Fletcher' (Chet Cunningham).

[artist uknown], DAKOTA DOXY, (SPUR # 22) - "Spur lost his money and his memory, but not his way with the ladies." - Another release in this adult-western series from Leisure Books by 'Dirk Fletcher' (Chet Cunningham).

[artist unknown], DODGE CITY DOLL, (SPUR # 24) - "Found 'em, fell for 'em, fooled 'em and forgot 'em." - Another release in this Leisure Books adult-western series 'Dirk Fletcher' (Chet Cunningham).

[artist unknown], THE STRANGER FROM TEXAS - "He played a lone hand against the range king's deadly killers" - Macfadden-Bartell's paperback release of the western by Allen K. Echols.

[artist unknown], SHADOW OF DISASTER, (IDAHO # 6) - "Gunfight...to get rid of a traitor !" - The comic cover was featured in STEVE HOLLAND-COWBOY.

     COVERS -- STILL FULLY LOADED

[artist unknown], THE HARD RIDERS, - "The sod-busters were coming and the Montana cattle kings were going to see their range cut up into farms . . . unless the Hard-Riders stopped them . . ." - The Macfadden Books paperback release of Lee Floren's western.  I note that Vic Prezio has used this 'pose' a couple times, but perhaps I'd learn that *many* western artists have . . .

[artist unknown], MISSOURI WOODHAWKS, (POWELL'S ARMY # 7) - Another Zebra paperback release in this western series by 'Terence Duncan' (that's a house-name and actual author's name not yet found).  I'd say this is probably painted by George Wilson, as he did a number of other covers in this series and, to what extent it can be, it certainly 'looks like' a lot of his more traditional work.

[artist unknown], ROBBERS ROOST, (POWELL'S ARMY # 4) - Another Zebra paperback release in this western series by 'Terence Duncan' (James Reasoner).  I'd say this is probably painted by George Wilson, as he did a number of other covers in this series and it certainly 'looks like' a lot of his more traditional work.

[artist unknown], COLORADO CUTIE, (SPUR # 20) - "Spur lived for trouble - this time it nearly killed him." - Another release in this adult-western series from Leisure Books by 'Dirk Fletcher' (Chet Cunningham).

[artist unknown], HELENA HELLION, (SPUR # 19) - "To kill Libby, they had to gun down Spur. Many had tried, none had lived to tell about it." - Another release in this Leisure Books adult-western series by 'Dirk Fletcher' (Chet Cunningham).  Note that this was the art used on the later 'double' edition that included this story.

[unknown artist (thought to be perhaps Morris (Mo) Gollub)], HERITAGE OF THE DESERT, (FOUR COLOR # 236) - presenting an adaptation of Zane Grey's novel of that title.

[unknown artist], FIGHT FOR THE FORT, (FOUR COLOR # 626) - "None could escape the Fight For The Fort !" - Adventures of Ben Bowie and his Mountain Men.  I've seen it suggested that Hank Hartman created this cover.

[unknown artist (thought to be perhaps Ernest Nordli)], [unknown title], (THE LONE RANGER # 37) - The current iteration of filmed Lone Ranger stories, now televised, 're-branded' the Masked Man by consistently presenting him in a blue shirt.  This comic-book series joined the trend with this issue, but lore has it that the reason a few copies of this edition appeared with the Ranger adorned in a red shirt is that the transistion decision didn't happen fast enough to catch the beginning of the print run.
